Gutter Parts Names Explained

Gutter parts have trade names that confuse homeowners: gutter, downpipe, outlet, union, stop end, bracket, fascia, soffit and shoe. This guide names each part, explains what it does, and shows how the parts fit together as a system. Each part has a job, and a fault in one part affects the whole system.

The gutter run itself

The gutter is the horizontal channel that collects rainwater from the roof edge. Lengths join end to end along an elevation. The run falls slightly towards a downpipe, so water flows rather than stands.

Gutter profiles vary: half-round, square and ogee are the common shapes. Profile affects capacity and appearance, and parts must match the profile when replaced.

GutterHorizontal channel collecting roof water.
DownpipeVertical pipe carrying water to the ground.
OutletConnection from gutter to downpipe.
UnionJoint between two gutter lengths.
Stop endCap closing the end of a run.
BracketFixing holding the gutter to the fascia.
ShoeBend at the downpipe base directing water out.

Joints, ends and fixings

Unions join lengths and seal the joint. A union contains a seal that ages and may need renewal. Stop ends close a run where it ends without a downpipe, and they are a common leak point when their seals fail.

Brackets fix the gutter to the fascia board at intervals along the run. Bracket spacing affects sag: widely spaced brackets let the run dip under water weight. Brackets also set the fall, because their positions define the gradient.

Outlets, downpipes and shoes

The outlet, sometimes called a running outlet, connects the gutter to the downpipe. It is a common blockage point, because debris collects where the flow narrows. Downpipes carry water vertically to the ground, with bends where the pipe changes direction.

The shoe is the bend at the downpipe base that directs water away from the wall. Shoes block frequently, because debris settles at the bend. Downpipe unblocking often means clearing the shoe, not the whole pipe.

Fascia, soffit and the roofline

The fascia is the vertical board at the roof edge, carrying gutter brackets. The soffit is the board underneath, closing the gap to the wall. Together with the gutter, they form the roofline.

Roofline is the category term for the whole assembly. When a homeowner is unsure which part is at fault, roofline is the useful word: it covers fascia, soffit and guttering together.

Frequently asked questions

What is a gutter union?

A joint between two gutter lengths, containing a seal. Unions are a common leak point when seals age.

What is a downpipe shoe?

The bend at the downpipe base that directs water away from the wall. Shoes block frequently, because debris settles at the bend.

What is the difference between fascia and soffit?

Fascia is the vertical board carrying the gutter. Soffit is the board underneath, closing the gap to the wall.
