Signs of a Blocked Downpipe

Signs of a blocked downpipe include a gutter that overflows although it looks clear, a downpipe that runs dry in rain, gurgling sounds, and damp at the base of a wall. This guide explains each sign, and how a downpipe blockage differs from a gutter blockage.

The classic sign: overflow above a dry downpipe

A gutter that overflows while the downpipe below it stays dry is the clearest downpipe sign. Water cannot get away, so it spills over the gutter edge instead. The gutter itself may be perfectly clear.

Watch in rain, from the ground. Each downpipe outlet should run during a shower. One that stays dry while its neighbours flow, with overflow above it, is almost certainly blocked.

Gurgling and slow drainage

Gurgling from a downpipe means air and water are fighting through a partial blockage. Drainage slows, then stops as the blockage grows. A downpipe that drains slowly after rain, long after others have finished, is partially blocked.

Slow drainage is easy to miss, because it looks like normal runoff. Timing helps: compare downpipes on the same elevation. One that lags well behind the others deserves a check.

Damp and pooling at the base

Water that cannot drain through a downpipe finds other routes. It spills at joints, runs down the wall, or backs up and overflows at the gutter. Damp patches at the base of a wall, and pooling near a downpipe shoe, both follow.

Damp at a wall base has several causes, and a downpipe blockage is only one. The check is simple, though: if the downpipe above the damp patch runs dry in rain, the blockage is the likely cause.

Downpipe blockage or gutter blockage?

Flow patterns separate the two faults. A gutter fault fills the run evenly. A downpipe fault leaves the gutter above it spilling while the rest of the run drains as normal. Where the spill sits is the clue that matters.

That distinction decides the fix. A gutter clear will not cure a failed downpipe, and a downpipe clear will not cure a blocked run. The cause is pinned down before any work is quoted, so the visit is not wasted.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my downpipe is blocked?

Watch in rain: a downpipe that runs dry while the gutter above overflows is almost certainly blocked. Gurgling and damp at the wall base are further signs.

Can a blocked downpipe cause damp?

Yes. Water that cannot drain spills at joints, runs down walls and pools at the base, causing damp patches over time.

Where do downpipes block most often?

Narrow points catch debris first: the bend at the base, other bends in the pipe, and the entry from the gutter. Those three spots account for most downpipe blockages.
